Tummy Tuck Vs Lipo: Which Do I Need?
What is Liposuction?
Very simply, liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove fat from your body. Performed under local anesthesia, a small cannula is used to suction fat cells away from the treated body area. Its not jsut about removing the fat, but removing it in a way to produce a thinner fat layer with pleasing curves and contours. As a result, there is a great deal of artistry and creativity required by the surgeon to produce great results.
The advantages of liposuction is that it is minimally invasive, is performed under local anesthesia, has minimal downtime and is relatively inexpensive. The disadvantages of liposuction is that it does not address large amounts of excess skin and cannot repair separated abdominal muscles.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
As it name implies, a tummy tuck is designed to surgically address a loose abdomen typically produced after childbirth. Requiring general anesthesia, a tummy tuck involves removal of excess abdominal skin as well as repairing loose abdominal muscles. The desired effect is to produce a thinner and tighter abdomen and waist.
The advantages of a tummy tuck is that large amounts of excess skin including stretch marks are permanently removed from the body and the ability to directly repair loose abdominal muscles. The disadvantages of a tummy tuck include the need to “go under”, a large scar and the increased downtime and expense.
So what do I need, a tummy tuck or lipo? This is a very individualized question that depends on your body concerns and the results that you desire. If you have a minimal amount of loose skin and more excess fat, liposuction is best for you. However, if you have a large amount of loose abdominal skin and stretch marks, as well a bulging abdomen due to stretched out muscles, a tummy tuck would be best for you.
