What’s a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover Surgery: Staci Hix-Hernandez MD Approach. >Traditionally a mommy makeover is thought to be a tummy tuck with a breast augmentation +/- lift.  however, no two women are alike, and certainly no two pregnancies are alike.  Some women gain more weight and lose more weight than others.  Some women are blessed with great genetics and end up with no body changes after pregnancy.  However, many women suffer loose skin, relaxed muscles and stretch marks.  There is a lot to say about going into pregnancy as healthy as you can as a way to avoid these problems.  But once you have them, what can you do about them? What’s a Mommy Makeover? >I view a mommy makeover as addressing the concerns that arose as a result of pregnancies.  For each individual this will be different.  There are certain anatomical changes that occur as a result of pregnancy that diet and exercise alone cannot fix.  Its not always the breast and stomach.  Maybe the primary concern is her neck or arms, perhaps the thighs. >The most important thing is to sit and listen.  I need to discover what each patient is concerned about as well as what her outcome goals are. I don’t try to fit a patient into a cookie cutter procedure.  I design a specialized treatment plan to treat each individual.  In my opinion this is the only way to get the best possible outcome. Breast Rejuvenation. The breasts can take a beating after pregnancy and breastfeeding.  Many women are left with deflated and droopy breasts.  The approach to breast rejuvenation in the mommy makeover involves a breast lift or mastopexy and/or breast augmentation.  Some degree of sagging breast tissue may be dealt with breast implants alone, but significant breast sagging will most likely require a breast lift.  If the breasts are deflated, they can be augmented with breast implants or natural breast augmentation with fat transfer. Tummy Tuck The abdomen takes the brunt of the effects of pregnancy.  It stretches out to accommodate the pregnancy and then is expected to return to normal.  Unfortunately, sometimes the muscles of the abdominal wall come apart, letting the abdomen to bulge out.  This is where a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty comes in.  These muscles are actually sewed back together leaving a tight, flat belly.  The abdominal skin can also be stretched out leaving sagging and stretch marks.  The tummy tuck addresses this too, removing the excess skin and stretch marks. Body Contouring Smartlipo Liposuction can also be used in a mommy makeover.  Excess fat can easily be removed and even transferred to another body area like in a Brazilian Butt Lift. Mommy Makeover Recovery The great thing about mommy makeover surgery, is that all of the procedures can be done in one session.  As a result, your recovery is combined and shortened.  You will be back on your feet immediately, but will need to take it easy for a few weeks.  However, the wait will be worth it as your pre-pregnancy figure returns! Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck. This is an age-old plastic surgery question that both patients & surgeons have struggled with.  In except the most obvious cases, there is no one right answer for everyone.  There are many individualized factors that come in to play. Both liposuction and tummy tucks have their advantages and certain downsides. What is Liposuction? Simply put, liposuction is the suctioning of fat from the body.  Now it’s more complicated than that, as liposuction technique approaches an art form.  Removing fat in the right amount from the right areas to achieve body contouring, requires an artistic eye.   So liposuction is ideally suited to remove fatty deposits from around the body. The other lesser known effect of liposuction is skin tightening.  We routinely see at least 50% skin tightening after a liposuction procedure.  This is important, as the fat layer gets smaller we want the skin to follow along.  This is the basis of shrink-wrap liposuction.  There are several advanced liposuction techniques to try to achieve even more skin tightening.  They involve performing superficial liposuction, right under the skin to maximize the post-procedure skin retraction.  Laser Liposuction using Smartlipo can also be used to introduce heat which further tightens the skin. The best thing about liposuction is that it can be safely performed under local anesthesia.  There are no big incisions, just multiple small entrance points.  The patient can resume normal activity almost immediately and downtime is minimal. What is a Tummy Tuck? A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure mainly indicated to deal with loose skin and muscles of the abdomen.  In many women, the weight gain during pregnancy stretches out both the abdominal wall and skin.  This leads to droopy, protuberant belly.  The tummy tuck deals with this by removing the loose skin and tightening the abdominal wall.   The tummy tuck procedure requires a rather large incision below the bikini area.   The loose skin is then pulled down and the excess removed.  Usually this requires the belly button to be repositioned.  Deep stitches are then placed to sew the loose abdominal muscles together.   Liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck for body contouring. The advantages of a tummy tuck is that it will leave you immediately with a flat abdomen, remove stretch marks and tighten your muscles.  It can be performed under local anesthesia, but usually, general anesthesia is required.  The downside includes the large scar, higher rate of complications, more downtime and limitations, a ‘surgical’ looking abdomen and added cost. So Liposuction Vs Tummy Tuck, which is right for me? If you have excess abdominal fat and no loose skin, liposuction is your best bet.  If you have mild loose skin that snaps back after tugging it, liposuction with targeted skin tightening will also work.  If you have a large apron of skin that has lost its elasticity or have had massive weight loss, a tummy tuck is required.   These are just generalized recommendations.  What is right for you depends on your amount of fat and loose skin, your tolerance for a scar and downtime, desired results and available funds.   This a where a plastic surgery consultation comes in, to help you assess your situation and give you options for liposuction vs tummy tuck.   Procedure     Liposuction     Tummy Tuck Anesthesia            Local Awake             General Asleep Scars                      Small                         Large Results                  1 Month                    Immediate Skin Tightening  >50%                         100% Muscle repair      No                              Yes Stretch Marks     No                              Yes Downtime           1 Week                       1 Month Cost                      $$                               $$$$ Mommy Makeover Of course, there are many other changes to a woman’s body during pregnancy besides her belly.  A mommy makeover can combine breast rejuvenation procedures like a breast augmentation and/or breast lift with a tummy tuck for decreased downtime and better overall results. Is a Mini Tummy Tuck Right for Me?

Loose Skin on the Belly. For many people who are trying to lose weight, get in shape and tone up and the belly remains one of the most challenging areas to shrink. Women in particularly are prone to sagging tummies post-pregnancy after the skin has been stretched and the abdominal muscles have been separated causing a protruding appearance. As important as regular exercise and a good diet  are to achieving and maintaining a sleek stomach, these efforts don’t always yield the desired results. This can be very frustrating for those who are trying so hard to lose a few inches around their mid sections.  Some of these patients may be helped by a mini tummy tuck. What is a Mini Tummy Tuck? A mini–tummy tuck is a popular variation of the ever popular tummy tuck.  Tummy tuck patients  are looking to be rid of excess skin on their tummy and tighten their stomach region. A mini tummy tuck is much like a traditional tummy tuck in that an incision is made to remove excess skin and pull the remaining skin down tighter for a more streamlined appearance. The perfect candidate for a mini tummy tuck is someone whose main frustrations with their stomach rest just below their belly button and who are in generally good shape otherwise. These ideal patients may have been struggling with a weight loss plateau and are engaged in regular exercise and have a fairly healthy diet, but just can’t seem to get their lower stomach toned up. Mini Tummy Tuck vs Full Tummy Tuck   The mini-tummy tuck can be performed easily with the help of a local anesthesia which is much less risky than traditional tummy tucks in which a general anesthesia is used. The belly button will not require relocation with a mini tummy tuck as the loose skin below the belly button is removed and the edges are carefully sewn up. If there is loose skin in the upper abdomen, the mini tummy tuck will not work. Also, he mini tummy tuck only provides limited access to the abdominal muscles.  As a result, loose muscles above the belly button cannot be addressed. How long does a mini tummy tuck last? A mini tummy tuck provides long-lasting results and the procedure is usually completed within a 2-5 hour time frame depending on the patient’s individual circumstances. Recovery time varies as well but most patients can expect a 2-6 week recovery period before returning to work and a 12 week period in which all strenuous activity should be avoided while the region heals.  No drains are needed with a mini-tummy tuck which is usually necessary part of the traditional tummy tuck process. How much does a mini tummy tuck cost? The cost of a mini-tummy tuck is significantly less expensive than a traditional tummy tuck as well though the cost of the procedure will need to be discussed with your doctor beforehand.  Cosmetic Surgery Prices. How do I find out if a Mini Tummy Tuck is right for me? Easy!  Make a free consultation with Plastic Surgeon Dr. Staci Hix-Hernandez MD, who is an expert at tummy tucks and abdominal wall reconstructions.  She will meet with you and discuss the appropriate procedure to reach your goals. Tummy Tuck Surgery Tummy tucks are popular procedures for patients who recently lost weight or went through childbirth only to find a pack of excess skin in the tummy area. There are several treatments designed to produce skin tightening, but when there is a drastic need like in many tummy tuck patients, non-surgical treatments are not enough to resolve the issue. There are some serious downsides to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure is designed to reduce excess fat and skin as well as tighten the underlying muscles in the area. It is a procedure that addresses several issues but in doing so, produces a significant scar that generally spans from hip to hip and many patients are not comfortable with the size of the scar. Mini Tummy Tuck The mini tummy tuck, offered at Beleza Medspa, is a good alternative for patients who are not candidates for a full tummy tuck but need the skin tightening that comes with it. Generally, mini tummy tuck candidates have less skin to remove and do not need the structural work that is done in conjunction with a full tummy tuck. The benefits of the mini tummy tuck include a smaller, less noticeable and often lower scar. Another benefit is that the procedure can be done without a general anesthetic using an injected numbing solution and a mild oral sedative. Because only the skin is affected and the muscle under is left alone, most mini tummy tuck patients do not report high levels of pain during recovery. Liposuction Tummy Tuck Many SmartLipo patients are opting in to a mini tummy tuck to enhance the effects of the SmartLipo procedure. Because SmartLipo addresses some skin laxity but cannot improve the look of drastically saggy skin, the mini tummy tuck is added to fill that need. Laser Tummy Tuck However, many patients can have their loose skin addressed alone with a Laser Tummy Tuck.  The heat produced form the Smartlipo Laser can lead to a great deal of skin tightening.  The procedure can be repeated for even greater results.  The tummy tuck scar can be avoided altogether. When added to a SmartLipo procedure, the mini tummy tuck does not drastically raise the price and is a great option for moms who want to improve the look of saggy skin left over from pregnancy or patients who lost weight and want to show it off. Some patients are not ideal candidates for the mini tummy tuck and would benefit from Smart Lipo or a full tummy tuck. The best way to determine if the mini tummy tuck is right for you is to come in for a free consultation so our staff can examine the area and make the best recommendation for your needs. How to Lose Belly Fat.

Losing Belly Fat Depends on the Type of Fat Lots of us have it.  Annoying belly fat that ruins our appearance and saps our self-esteem.  But when we look around, we can see that there are many types of belly fat.  There are those with beer bellies, large, protuberant abdomens that almost mimic pregnancy.  On the other end of the spectrum, are those with small rolls that hang over the belt line.   Then in between, we see those with loose skin and belly fat.  Just as the types of belly fat differ, the significance and treatment of each varies also. The Beer Belly or Visceral Fat. The worst type of belly fat to have is the beer belly.  It’s name is derived from men who consume large amounts of alcohol.  Beer tends to be rich in excess amounts of empty calories.  It is not only cosmetically displeasing, but the health consequences of this type of fat are very significant.  When you look at this type of belly fat you will notice that only a small amount of fat is found under the surface of the skin.  This is because the vast majority of this fat is contained inside of the abdomen itself and is known as visceral fat.  Visceral fat is a very  dangerous fat to have in excess.  It is very biologically active and has many ill effects on the body to include insulin resistance and diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.  Unfortunately this fat is not accessible with surgery or other noninvasive procedures.  It only responds to a medical weight loss diet and exercise.   It is critical to loose weight to prevent the health consequences of excess visceral fat. As the weight is lost, the cosmetic concerns can also be addressed. Pinchable (Subcutaneous) Belly Fat. In contrast to beer bellies, are those with significant pinchable layers (subcutaneous) of belly fat. Although less dangerous than visceral fat, this type of fat still has negative impacts on health and appearance.   This type of fat responds not only to weight loss and exercise, but also surgical and noninvasive procedures.  Liposuction is ideal to remove this fat as well as sculpt its shape to accentuate natural body curves.   Liposuction alternative procedures like Coolsculpting can freeze this fat layer for long-lasting reduction. Loose Skin and Belly Fat. Further complicating belly fat for many women is loose skin.  In fact, the belly fat gives the loose skin support and removing it can worsen the skin laxity.  In these situations, another modality must be introduced to deal with the loose skin.  Heat can be added either internally via laser liposuction or from the outside (Venus Freeze) to induce skin tightening.  Heat can deliver a good amount of tightening without large incisions.  But in many patients, the amount of excess skin exceeds the capability of the laser or other heating devices.   These cases require excision of excess skin via a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty.  Liposuction and heat can be combined with a tummy tuck for optimal results. Beleza Medspa Austin is proud to announce the introduction of power assisted liposuction to its liposuction program. After careful evaluation of multiple technologies, Dr Broder chose power assisted liposuction as the next technology to add to his practice. “We have performed more than 500 procedures over the last several years, all using the smartlipo laser and manual suction to aspirate the fat”, Dr Broder reports. “The power assist technology amplifies my ability to sculpt and remove fat as well as making the procedure more comfortable for the patient”. MicroAire’s PAL® LipoSculptor™ is the only US-patented liposuction instrument using a reciprocating motion (rather than rotating) to facilitate the movement of the cannula within tissue. This innovation reduces the amount of manual force and physical effort required to perform lipoplasty, especially in areas with fibrous tissue. The result is a more comfortable experience for both the surgeon and the patient. “We are removing even larger amounts of fat with less effort, allowing more time to be spent on bodysculpting and skin tightening with the laser”, Dr Broder states, “Plus the power assisted liposuction technology is very safe and comfortable”. …

Is a Tummy Tuck the Right Decision for You?

Healthy weight loss can be great for your health, self-esteem, and appearance. But for some, shedding pounds quickly can lead to an excess of loose skin. The most popular option for dealing with the issues of excess skin from quick weight loss is an abodminoplasty, or a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin and tightening the abdominal muscles. In other words, a tummy tuck allows the rest of your body to catch up with your rapid weight loss. When an overweight individual loses a lot of weight–50 pounds or more–sometimes they reach their healthy weight, but are still not satisfied with their body. The sagging skin can still be detrimental to the individual’s self-esteem. For an individual who has lost a great deal of weight, getting a tummy tuck is often the last step of obtaining the slim figure that he or she feels comfortable in. If you think that a tummy tuck may be right for you, contact the professionals at Beleza Medical Spa today.…
