Eye Wrinkles

What are the types of Eye Wrinkles? Our eyes are constantly opening and closing every time we blink.  Plus, when we smile and make other facial expressions, our eyes have a role too.  All this movement eventually causes wrinkles in the skin around the eyes.  The eye is surrounded by a circular muscle that acts to open and close the eyelid.  The wrinkles that result from its movement, tend to form in lines radiating from the center of the eye.  These eye wrinkles can run up to the eyebrow and down to the cheek.  These under eye wrinkles are better known as Crows Feet. What causes Eye Wrinkles?Did you ever wonder why children don’t have eye wrinkles as they are constantly opening and closing their eyes too?  The answer is contained in the overall condition of the elasticity of the skin.  Children have a lot of elasticity and their skin easily and readily bounces back after movement.  However, as we age, we lose that elasticity and after a movement, the skin remains folded and an under eye wrinkle eventually forms. What causes the loss of skin elasticity? The easy answer is the sun.  Damaging UV rays from the sun, damage the two main components of the skin, collagen and elastin.  These proteins are the building blocks of skin and are critical for healthy, youthful appearing skin.   Sun damage not only damages collagen and elastin in the skin, but also decreases their production.  The result of the loss of collagen and elastin is skin that loses its elasticity and allows eye wrinkles to form. What can we do to treat eye wrinkles? There are several approaches to treat eye wrinkles.  The first involves relaxing the circular eye muscle around the eye that causes them.  Our goal is to relax the muscle’s movement, not paralyze it.  Botox and Xeomin, are well known neuromodulators that can serve this purpose.  A few relatively painless injections of Botox or Xeomin placed around the eye can help to reduce eye wrinkles and more importantly, prevent new eye wrinkles.  Botox and Xeomin last around 3-4 months, and continued maintenance is required.  If the wrinkles are real deep, then a dermal filler like Juvederm may be required.  Fillers like Juvederm can fill in the wrinkles and also replace lost under eye volume.  Botox and Juvederm work the best together to completely erase eye wrinkles. The other treatment for eye wrinkles is to improve the elasticity of the skin around the eye.  The easiest first step is to use an eye cream.  The most effective eye cream is a retinol or retinoid based product.  Retinol and retinoids actually activate the skin cells to produce new collagen and elastin, actually rejuvenating the skin.  There are many other products that are complementary to retinols and retinoids like Vitamin C, peptides, etc.  Of course none of these products are useful if you do not prevent more sun damage with a sunscreen.More advanced cases of sun damage and eye wrinkles, require procedures that can stimulate even more collagen production.  These procedures include chemical peels, microneedling and laser resurfacing.  Chemical peels can remove several layers of skin and sun damage, replacing it with new skin.  Microneedling involves the use of tiny needles that penetrate the lower layer of skin, the dermis.  The dermis is where collagen and elastin are produced, and the trauma from the microneedles induces the skin cells to produce more.  When the wrinkles and sun damage are severe, laser resurfacing may be needed.  Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing uses tiny laser beams to not only stimulate collagen and elastic production in the dermis, but to also remove the upper layers of the skin.  Each of these procedures have varying levels of discomfort and downtime, and a free consultation can help you decide on the best procedure for your needs.…

I had the pleasure of having my first ever Microneedling with PRP procedure this summer. I wanted to take a moment to harp on how amazing this experience was for my skin care goals. If you’re curious about having this procedure, take a moment to read about my experience. I was blown away by the microneedling results and truly believe this procedure can do wonders on almost every skin type.  Check out my microneedling before and afters!Microneedling with PRP PreparationI have to say, I was pretty nervous going into this procedure. I have filmed Microneedling with PRP over a dozen times, so I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on how it works. The only thing I wasn’t sure about was the pain level. Every patient I had ever filmed remained calm while filming and all looked as though they were actually enjoying the procedure. I started to wonder if it hurt at all. I recruited Beleza expert injector and aesthetician, Emily Stimson, to administer my procedure who, in my humble opinion, is a MicroPen Master. When I arrived at Beleza in Cedar Park to undergo this procedure, Emily immediately began applying numbing cream to my face and explained how important the numbing cream is for microneedling — my nerves definitely grew stronger at this point. The numbing cream needs about 20-25 minutes to kick in (and we weren’t starting even 1 minute early). During that time, Emily drew my blood for the PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma. If you have a tendency to get queasy from having your blood drawn, rest assured this is a cakewalk compared to most vials. This is a TINY vial. It takes about 30 seconds for it to fill up. From there, the vial is placed into a centrifuge where it spins for 30 minutes. The centrifuge is a vital part of this procedure because it activates your blood cells and forces them to separate and release growth factors. This part of your blood is called PRP. We can use the growth factors in the PRP for cosmetic purposes to trigger your body’s repair mechanisms for skin rejuvenation.MICRONEEDLING PROCEDUREOnce Emily had the syringes loaded with my body’s PRP, it was time to remove the numbing cream (gulp). By this time, I was definitely numb, but of course still nervous about the pain. Emily cleaned my face to remove the numbing cream and then applied the MicroGlide Hyaluronic Acid and the PRP to the skin. Here we go, time to microneedle!I was pleasantly surprised at the low about of pain for this procedure. You definitely can feel it, and some areas are more sensitive than others, but this procedure was a piece of cake! Anyone should be able to tolerate the pain from microneedling, if you even want to call it “pain”.Emily worked in small 1-2 inch sections. She would apply the MicroGlide and PRP on to each section and then microneedle over the 1-2 inch sections. The PRP dries so fast, so she was careful to not microneedle over a dry area. She started with my cheeks, then my chin, then the nose (which tickled SO much), then forehead, and then finished on my neck. It was over before I knew it. On a scale of 1-10, (10 being the most amount of pain), I would say there were a few areas that got up to a 6 on the pain level, but they only lasted for about a minute. The majority of the time I felt like the pain level was between a 3-4.Injections during a Microneedling with PRP treatment? The biggest myth about this procedure is that your own blood is injected into your skin. This is so false! There are no injections during this procedure. Should you want to go with a Microneedling with PRP (which includes a syringe of Voluma), or should you want to inject your PRP into the dermis of your skin, then yes, there would be injections. But, for a standard Microneedling with PRP) there are no injections. The PRP is simply applied onto your skin and then your provider performs microneedling over the PRP.After Microneedling with PRPFollowing my procedure, I followed Emily’s instructions very carefully to ensure I would have the best results. Beleza also provides take-home instructions for every patient, so you don’t have to worry about your post care. I was instructed to wait at least 4 hours before washing the PRP off my face, I ended up waiting 6 hours just because I didn’t have any reason to wash my face. I applied Hyaluronic Acid every hour during that 6 hours. After 6 hours, I washed my face using Elta MD’s Foaming Facial Cleanser with cool  water and then applied more Hyaluronic Acid and went to bed.It is important not to use sunscreen for at least 48 hours following your procedure. If you need to be outdoors, be sure to bring a hat or scarf. I continued this regime night and day for 2 days. At the end of the second day, I began to use SkinMedica’s TNS Recovery Complex, SkinMedica’s HA5, and Elta MD facial sunscreen, only…

Sun Damage and PhotoAging Most of the aging of our skin is caused by sun exposure.  The visible signs of photoaging include wrinkles, sun spots, roughness, redness and laxity.  Much of this damage can be prevented by avoiding the sun and using sunscreen.  However, once you have sun damage, it is important to understand how it happened.  Skin consists of two main layers, the epidermis and dermis.  The epidermis basically consists of a thin layer of dead cells.  It is the lower layer, the dermis where the main structure of the skin consists.  It is here the two main components of skin, collagen and elastin are located.  Collagen gives skin its toughness and elastin gives skin its elasticity. Its is the dermis where the majority of sun damage occurs.  Specifically, UVA rays penetrate into the dermis and cause damage to the collagen and elastin fibers.  Not only does the sun damage the collagen and elastin that is present, but it actually turns off new production leading to the sun damage we see. What does MicroNeedling do? Microneedling was specifically designed to allow medical professionals to access the skin’s dermal layer.  A series of small surgical needles are used to penetrate the dermis during an in-office visit.  The needles are designed to induce small wounds in the dermis that stimulate repair and production of collagen and elastin.  This is also called collagen induction therapy (CIT) and will produce skin rejuvenation.  The other advantage to microneedling is that the small channels that are produced allow the delivery of medications to the dermis.  Most anti-aging creams out there fail to penetrate the skin to the dermis and hence fail to have any effect.  With the microchannels from microneedling, we have direct access to the dermis for drug delivery. GloPro Microneedling or Microneedling at Home. GloPro microneedling is a device designed for home use.  It combines microneedling and LED light therapy.  Does it work?  The needles on GloPro are 0.3o mm.  The skin thickness on the face can range from 0.5mm to 1.5mm.  So as you can see, for the needles to reach the dermis where the sun damage is, they must be larger than 0.5mm and preferably 1.0-1.5mm.  The Glopro needles cannot reach the dermis to produce any real, long-term changes.  Use of longer needles at home is dangerous.  The possibility of infections, scarring and allergic reactions is increased.  Professional microneedling at medical offices uses longer needles under controlled conditions.  The Glopro microneedling can induce some changes to the epidermis and skin plumping and may produce some temporary effects.Microneedling Austin @Beleza MedSpa Beleza Medspa utilizes Eclipse Micropens for microneedling procedures.  The Micropen uses disposable tips that has twelve (12) stainless steel micro‐needles (32‐gauge) which can be adjusted from 0.25 to 2.75 mm, giving physicians and aestheticians an innovative skin therapy system that is designed to cater to individual patient needs.  The Micropen is motorized and the high speed (8500 rpm) automated needling motion minimizes pain and discomfort, while better promoting an even absorption of topicals, acids and peptides into the skin which enhances overall results.  Microneedling with PRP can provide even better results.…

PRP Hair Treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma: A simple treatment for Hair Restoration. What is PRP?Platelets are small cells that circulate in your bloodstream.  Their sole job is to react to injuries to blood vessels.  When they come upon such damage, they break apart releasing a host of growth factors.   These growth factors not only help to stop the bleeding, but they attract other cells to begin to repair the damage. We can take advantage of these growth factors released by platelets for rejuvenation and renewal purposes.  After a standard in-office blood draw, the blood is spun down to isolate the platelets in the watery part of blood, the plasma. We draw off this platelet rich plasma (PRP) into a syringe and can then inject it all over the body.  PRP injections can then be used on many areas of the body to stimulate rejuvenation.  PRP hair treatment is one of these uses.So how does PRP Hair Restoration work?Visible hair loss is due to the loss of hair follicles in the scalp.  The remaining hair follicles are still present and able to grow new hair. Your PRP is rich with your natural growth factors and other proteins that can stimulate hair growth and repair of cell damage.  The PRP Hair treatment is believed to stimulate your remaining hair follicles to enter a growth phase and produce visible hair. How is the PRP Hair Treatment placed in the scalp?A topical anesthetic cream is placed on the scalp to give numbness.  There are two main ways to introduce the PRP into the scalp.  Micropen microneedling uses very small needles to make tiny perforations in the skin.  This allows tiny pores to be made that allow the PRP to be placed on the surface and travel down towards the hair follicles.  The other method is to use small needles to perform a series of injections into the scalp.  These two methods can be combined for best results. How long before I see any results from PRP Hair Treatments?Since we are using your own growth factors, it could take 1-2 months before you see any results.  The procedure should be repeated at the 2 month mark and then every 3-4 months as needed. Is PRP for Hair Loss safe?Yes.  PRP is from your own blood and carries no risk of any contagious disease.  There is also no  risk of allergic reaction as PRP is safe and natural. Can PRP be combined with other hair loss treatments.Yes! PRP is ideal to use along with Neograft Hair Transplant.  The PRP can be mixed with the harvested grafts and injected into the transplant areas for better results.PRP Hair Treatment CostThe great part of PRP hair treatment is that is is relatively inexpensive.  As it is done in-office with just a blood draw, PRP hair treatment is very affordable.  Contact us for a free consultation for further details.             Find our more about Hair Transplant.…

Medical Spas: Right for You?

Med Spa Austin TX Going to a medical spa can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience as well as a way to get some actual medical procedures and treatments. Med spas are considered a combination of a medical clinic and a day spa, but the procedures and treatments that can be administered are less than what an actual medical clinic is capable of.Services Performed at Med Spas There are many services performed at med spas. From basic spa treatments like massages and exfoliations to Botox and Hydrafacials, med spas have it all. Some other treatments include facials, waxing, massages, concierge medicine, men’s health, physicals, laser hair removal and much more depending on which type of spa that you are visiting and where the spa is located. The treatments and procedures available at a med spa vary by location because there are different laws and regulations that each state and/or country has to abide by.Training Required for Med Spa Physicians & Practitioners As stated before, the type of training and certifications required vary by area. One common factor is that everyone who administers a treatment or procedure is supposed to be trained, qualified and certified for that treatment. If you are ever doubtful of a staff member’s qualifications, all you have to do is ask to see the person’s certifications.Choosing a Med Spa that is Right for You The best way to choose the med spa that is right for you is by researching what you want and/or need. Using a search engine on the internet can be helpful in finding reviews, but reviews are not always trustworthy sources when dealing with anything health related. Sometimes you can get references from your primary physician, but even family and friends are great resources for finding a trustworthy clinic. What you decide to do is completely up to you, but it is highly recommended that you research the clinic before scheduling an appointment.Best Med Spa Austin Beleza Medspa Austin has been in business for more than 10 years.  It has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park and Killeen TX.  It is among the leaders in Botox & Juvederm, Hydrafacials, Microneedling, Coolsculpting and Ultherapy.  It has multiple locations with highly experienced and trained staff.  All staff are trained by the physician owner, Dr Lawrence Broder MD.  This is why you may consider Beleza Medspa the Best Med Spa Austin!…

Acne Scars Removal

How to Get Rid of Acne Scars. As teens, a lot of us dealt with acne. Some still deal with acne in the form of acne scars, which can cause extreme frustration. Difficult to treat, acne scars effect several layers of skin and often require extreme actions to address. At Beleza, we understand the confidence-busters acne scars can be for patients of all ages, so we offer several ways of treating them. Unfortunately, all treatments come with the caveat that while we can often minimize the appearance of scars, it is extremely difficult to eliminate acne scars altogether, so combination treatments may be applied to get the best results possible.Types of Acne Scars Three main subtypes of acne scars have been described to include rolling, ice-pick and box car.  Their appearance is self-explanatory and they can be found in various combinations.  Treatment for each type may require specific procedures for best results.Microneelding for Acne Scars Our newest tool in the fight against acne scars is Microneedling. A microneedle consists of an automated pen with tiny needles. As the provider rolls the pen across a patient’s face, it makes tiny perforations in the surface of the skin. Because the body recognizes that the skin is damaged, it immediately sends repair functions to the area to build up the skin again. This repair-damage-repair sequence, when repeated 3-5 times, can stimulate collagen and cause the skin to repair itself starting from within, improving the appearance of scarring. In addition, a serum from your blood (PRP) is applied to the just-rolled face which is packed with proteins that are vital building blocks in the skin. As it sinks into the deeper layers of the skin, now accessible because of the perforations of the roller, the serum aids in the healing process that happens after rolling is complete. In comparison to some of the other treatments we will discuss, microneedling is on the very low side of the pain scale with some patients describing it as comfortable. It also has very little to no downtime; the skin will look slightly red after the treatment and patients may be advised not to apply makeup or other lotions to the skin for several hours after but the areas will look normal within hours of the treatment.Dermal Fillers Acne scars typically leave noticeable divots in the skin.  One very effective acne scars removal method, is to inject dermal fillers into them.  A dermal filler like Juvederm is carefully injected into and under the skin to lift and fill them.  The effect from the dermal filler may be permanent or sometimes needs to be repeated.  Dermal fillers may be combined with subcision, where a needle or small blade is used to cut the scar tissue holding the acne scar open.Laser Resurfacing Our final tool in the fight against acne scars is CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing, which is associated with the most downtime, discomfort and efficacy of any of our acne scar treatments. In a 45 – 60 minute treatment, a fractional laser is applied to the skin, causing perforations is a DOT pattern across the entire affected area. This treatment is the most effective in treating scarring because it reaches the deepest layers of skin to initiate the healing process. With 7 – 10 days of downtime, laser resurfacing presents the most significant downtime but in many cases, only requires one treatment to see significant results in the reduction of acne scars. Bottom line – acne scars are difficult to treat, but the fight is worth it for many patients!  A combination of microneedling, laser resurfacing and dermal fillers may sometimes be required.  Make your free consultation to find out more.…
