Most Common Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures

ASDS Consumer Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedure Survey Recently, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery released their consumer survey of Cosmetic Dermatologic procedures.   There were many interesting findings why patients were seeking such procedures and what procedures they were looking for. Who influenced these consumers regarding their procedures? Surprisingly, while 50% of these consumers listed their Dermatologist as the most important, more than 40% listed their friends and more than 30% listed their primary care physician.  This indicates the importance of referrals from friends and families as well as the importance of other physician specialties in the recommendation of cosmetic procedures. Why are consumers exploring cosmetic dermatologic procedures? These finding were very interesting and also not surprising.  Consumer comments included “I want to feel more confident”, “I want to appear more attractive”, and “I want to look as young as I feel or better than my age”.  These are common refrains that we hear from our patients at Beleza Medspa.  When asked for reasons why they are waiting for such procedures they commented “Cost”, “May be painful” and “May not get the results I am looking for”.  Beleza medspa tries to reduce such concerns by offering specials and deals, less invasive and painful procedures and by trying to offer only procedures that are proven to be clinically effective. What are consumers bothered by? Again, these findings were interesting and not surprising.  The top body concerns were: “Excess weight on any part of the body”, “Line and wrinkles under the eyes”, “Excess fat under the chin/neck” and “Skin texture and or discoloration”.  Beleza Medspa offers solutions for all of these concerns including to lose fat, for eye wrinkles, double chins and skin texture and pigment problems. What are the most common Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures? The most popular procedures included body sculpting, treatments to tighten skin or smooth wrinkles using ultrasound, laser, light, or radiofrequency, microdermabrasion and laser hair removal.  Beleza Medspa offers Liposuction and Coolsculpting, Ultherapy, Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing, ThermiVa and Hydrafacials (replacing microdermabrasion). Which procedures did consumers find the most satisfying? Consumers rated the following procedures as most satisfying: injectable wrinkle relaxers and fillers, body sculpting,  laser and light treatments for redness, tone or scars, laser tattoo removal, vein treatments and chemical peels.  Beleza Medspa offers many of these procedures including Botox, Xeomin and Juvederm, Coolsculpting and Liposuction, IPL Photofacials, Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing, Sclerotherapy and Chemical Peels. How much do consumers pay for skin care? Almost 80% of Consumers reported spending up to $100 a month on skin care products and more than half would prefer to pay more up front to lower their costs annually.  Beleza Medspa has several programs designed specifically to lower the costs for regular skin care including the Beleza Babe Vip Program and the Fresh Skin Club.…

Eye Wrinkles

What are the types of Eye Wrinkles? Our eyes are constantly opening and closing every time we blink.  Plus, when we smile and make other facial expressions, our eyes have a role too.  All this movement eventually causes wrinkles in the skin around the eyes.  The eye is surrounded by a circular muscle that acts to open and close the eyelid.  The wrinkles that result from its movement, tend to form in lines radiating from the center of the eye.  These eye wrinkles can run up to the eyebrow and down to the cheek.  These under eye wrinkles are better known as Crows Feet. What causes Eye Wrinkles? Did you ever wonder why children don’t have eye wrinkles as they are constantly opening and closing their eyes too?  The answer is contained in the overall condition of the elasticity of the skin.  Children have a lot of elasticity and their skin easily and readily bounces back after movement.  However, as we age, we lose that elasticity and after a movement, the skin remains folded and an under eye wrinkle eventually forms. What causes the loss of skin elasticity? The easy answer is the sun.  Damaging UV rays from the sun, damage the two main components of the skin, collagen and elastin.  These proteins are the building blocks of skin and are critical for healthy, youthful appearing skin.   Sun damage not only damages collagen and elastin in the skin, but also decreases their production.  The result of the loss of collagen and elastin is skin that loses its elasticity and allows eye wrinkles to form. What can we do to treat eye wrinkles? There are several approaches to treat eye wrinkles.  The first involves relaxing the circular eye muscle around the eye that causes them.  Our goal is to relax the muscle’s movement, not paralyze it.  Botox and Xeomin, are well known neuromodulators that can serve this purpose.  A few relatively painless injections of Botox or Xeomin placed around the eye can help to reduce eye wrinkles and more importantly, prevent new eye wrinkles.  Botox and Xeomin last around 3-4 months, and continued maintenance is required.  If the wrinkles are real deep, then a dermal filler like Juvederm may be required.  Fillers like Juvederm can fill in the wrinkles and also replace lost under eye volume.  Botox and Juvederm work the best together to completely erase eye wrinkles. The other treatment for eye wrinkles is to improve the elasticity of the skin around the eye.  The easiest first step is to use an eye cream.  The most effective eye cream is a retinol or retinoid based product.  Retinol and retinoids actually activate the skin cells to produce new collagen and elastin, actually rejuvenating the skin.  There are many other products that are complementary to retinols and retinoids like Vitamin C, peptides, etc.  Of course none of these products are useful if you do not prevent more sun damage with a sunscreen. More advanced cases of sun damage and eye wrinkles, require procedures that can stimulate even more collagen production.  These procedures include chemical peels, microneedling and laser resurfacing.  Chemical peels can remove several layers of skin and sun damage, replacing it with new skin.  Microneedling involves the use of tiny needles that penetrate the lower layer of skin, the dermis.  The dermis is where collagen and elastin are produced, and the trauma from the microneedles induces the skin cells to produce more.  When the wrinkles and sun damage are severe, laser resurfacing may be needed.  Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing uses tiny laser beams to not only stimulate collagen and elastic production in the dermis, but to also remove the upper layers of the skin.  Each of these procedures have varying levels of discomfort and downtime, and a free consultation can help you decide on the best procedure for your needs.…

What exactly are Face Wrinkles? Well, face wrinkles are creases, folds or lines in the skin.  They can form for many reasons but most are due to aging.  Ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure wreaks havoc on our skin.  It causes the production of the building block of our skin, collagen, to slow and breakdown.  This causes thinning of the skin and loss of elasticity and the appearance of fine lines.  Smoking further accelerates aging of the skin.  Lets look at wrinkles treatment for face wrinkles & eye wrinkles, as well as wrinkles creams. Deep Wrinkles Skin is also backed by a full layer of connective tissue, fat, muscle and bone.  It is this underlying support that further gives skin a youthful appearance.  As we age or after massive weight loss, we lose this underlying support which leads to wrinkling and sagging of the skin.  This tends to cause the deeper wrinkles and lines that we see on our faces. Types of Wrinkles Wrinkles can also be defined whether they are static or dynamic.  Static wrinkles are present all the time while dynamic wrinkles occur only with facial movement.  Static wrinkles usually represent sign of aging and loss of collagen.  Dynamic wrinkles are normal as we express emotions.  However, repeated use of facial muscles can eventually convert dynamic wrinkles into permanent lines.  When we are younger, the skin easily bounces back but as we age it loses that ability.  Eye wrinkles are one form of dynamic wrinkles. Where do Face Wrinkles form? Wrinkles can form anywhere on the body where sun damage occurs.  The face receives a lot of sun exposure and has many facial muscle movements.  This makes face wrinkles very common.  The wrinkles tend to form in relation to the muscles of facial expression.  They form perpendicular to these muscles.  Under Eye wrinkles form across the eye muscles that close the eye.  Forehead wrinkles appear across the muscles that lift the brow.   Wrinkles around mouth form across the circular muscle that purses the lips. How do we Prevent Wrinkles? Generally what is good for your body is good for your skin.  Good nutrition, regular exercise, quality sleep and not smoking are essential for skin health. You can’t expect to lead an unhealthy lifestyle and have good skin.  Genetics does play a role in skin health and wrinkles but we have no control over it. Wrinkle Creams Protecting ourselves from the sun is critical.  Sun block, hats, sunglasses and avoiding the sun are all good practices.  Mineral makeups and the regular use of antioxidants can also help prevent sun damage to the skin.  The best wrinkle cream to  prevent wrinkles is the prescription tretinoin cream (retin A). Research has shown that the cream for wrinkles, retin a can stimulate skin cell turnover as well as collagen production.  Other effective wrinkle creams include antioxidants, vitamin C, and peptides. The easiest way to prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming static wrinkles is with the regular use of neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport.   Relaxing the muscles of facial expression will smooth lines and prevent the conversion of these wrinkles into long-lasting facial features.  Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Radiesse can restore facial volume and further prevent wrinkle formation. What is the Best Wrinkles Treatment? Once they have formed, wrinkles are hard to remove.  Botox and dysport are used to relax the muscles that caused them and provide some smoothing, especially eye wrinkles and forehead wrinkles.  However, if they are very deep, wrinkle treatment will require filling and support.  Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Radiesse can be used to further fill these lines.  Fat transfer offers the ability to naturally restore facial volume and smooth wrinkles. How to Remove Wrinkles Laser treatments like CO2 Laser Resurfacing can be used to resurface the skin as well as stimulate collagen production.  They are ideal for patients that have profound sun damage and signs of aging.  Chemical peels can also treat superficial to deep wrinkles depending on their depth of penetration. What do I begin Face Wrinkles Treatment? The best first step is to make a free consultation with one of our aestheticians or nurse injectors.  They will evaluate your skin and formulate a customized treatment plan to prevent and remove wrinkles.…
