Most Common Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures

ASDS Consumer Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedure SurveyRecently, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery released their consumer survey of Cosmetic Dermatologic procedures.   There were many interesting findings why patients were seeking such procedures and what procedures they were looking for.Who influenced these consumers regarding their procedures?Surprisingly, while 50% of these consumers listed their Dermatologist as the most important, more than 40% listed their friends and more than 30% listed their primary care physician.  This indicates the importance of referrals from friends and families as well as the importance of other physician specialties in the recommendation of cosmetic procedures. Why are consumers exploring cosmetic dermatologic procedures? These finding were very interesting and also not surprising.  Consumer comments included “I want to feel more confident”, “I want to appear more attractive”, and “I want to look as young as I feel or better than my age”.  These are common refrains that we hear from our patients at Beleza Medspa.  When asked for reasons why they are waiting for such procedures they commented “Cost”, “May be painful” and “May not get the results I am looking for”.  Beleza medspa tries to reduce such concerns by offering specials and deals, less invasive and painful procedures and by trying to offer only procedures that are proven to be clinically effective. What are consumers bothered by?Again, these findings were interesting and not surprising.  The top body concerns were: “Excess weight on any part of the body”, “Line and wrinkles under the eyes”, “Excess fat under the chin/neck” and “Skin texture and or discoloration”.  Beleza Medspa offers solutions for all of these concerns including to lose fat, for eye wrinkles, double chins and skin texture and pigment problems. What are the most common Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures? The most popular procedures included body sculpting, treatments to tighten skin or smooth wrinkles using ultrasound, laser, light, or radiofrequency, microdermabrasion and laser hair removal.  Beleza Medspa offers Liposuction and Coolsculpting, Ultherapy, Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing, ThermiVa and Hydrafacials (replacing microdermabrasion).Which procedures did consumers find the most satisfying?Consumers rated the following procedures as most satisfying: injectable wrinkle relaxers and fillers, body sculpting,  laser and light treatments for redness, tone or scars, laser tattoo removal, vein treatments and chemical peels.  Beleza Medspa offers many of these procedures including Botox, Xeomin and Juvederm, Coolsculpting and Liposuction, IPL Photofacials, Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing, Sclerotherapy and Chemical Peels. How much do consumers pay for skin care?Almost 80% of Consumers reported spending up to $100 a month on skin care products and more than half would prefer to pay more up front to lower their costs annually.  Beleza Medspa has several programs designed specifically to lower the costs for regular skin care including the Beleza Babe Vip Program and the Fresh Skin Club.…

Eye Wrinkles

What are the types of Eye Wrinkles? Our eyes are constantly opening and closing every time we blink.  Plus, when we smile and make other facial expressions, our eyes have a role too.  All this movement eventually causes wrinkles in the skin around the eyes.  The eye is surrounded by a circular muscle that acts to open and close the eyelid.  The wrinkles that result from its movement, tend to form in lines radiating from the center of the eye.  These eye wrinkles can run up to the eyebrow and down to the cheek.  These under eye wrinkles are better known as Crows Feet. What causes Eye Wrinkles?Did you ever wonder why children don’t have eye wrinkles as they are constantly opening and closing their eyes too?  The answer is contained in the overall condition of the elasticity of the skin.  Children have a lot of elasticity and their skin easily and readily bounces back after movement.  However, as we age, we lose that elasticity and after a movement, the skin remains folded and an under eye wrinkle eventually forms. What causes the loss of skin elasticity? The easy answer is the sun.  Damaging UV rays from the sun, damage the two main components of the skin, collagen and elastin.  These proteins are the building blocks of skin and are critical for healthy, youthful appearing skin.   Sun damage not only damages collagen and elastin in the skin, but also decreases their production.  The result of the loss of collagen and elastin is skin that loses its elasticity and allows eye wrinkles to form. What can we do to treat eye wrinkles? There are several approaches to treat eye wrinkles.  The first involves relaxing the circular eye muscle around the eye that causes them.  Our goal is to relax the muscle’s movement, not paralyze it.  Botox and Xeomin, are well known neuromodulators that can serve this purpose.  A few relatively painless injections of Botox or Xeomin placed around the eye can help to reduce eye wrinkles and more importantly, prevent new eye wrinkles.  Botox and Xeomin last around 3-4 months, and continued maintenance is required.  If the wrinkles are real deep, then a dermal filler like Juvederm may be required.  Fillers like Juvederm can fill in the wrinkles and also replace lost under eye volume.  Botox and Juvederm work the best together to completely erase eye wrinkles. The other treatment for eye wrinkles is to improve the elasticity of the skin around the eye.  The easiest first step is to use an eye cream.  The most effective eye cream is a retinol or retinoid based product.  Retinol and retinoids actually activate the skin cells to produce new collagen and elastin, actually rejuvenating the skin.  There are many other products that are complementary to retinols and retinoids like Vitamin C, peptides, etc.  Of course none of these products are useful if you do not prevent more sun damage with a sunscreen.More advanced cases of sun damage and eye wrinkles, require procedures that can stimulate even more collagen production.  These procedures include chemical peels, microneedling and laser resurfacing.  Chemical peels can remove several layers of skin and sun damage, replacing it with new skin.  Microneedling involves the use of tiny needles that penetrate the lower layer of skin, the dermis.  The dermis is where collagen and elastin are produced, and the trauma from the microneedles induces the skin cells to produce more.  When the wrinkles and sun damage are severe, laser resurfacing may be needed.  Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing uses tiny laser beams to not only stimulate collagen and elastic production in the dermis, but to also remove the upper layers of the skin.  Each of these procedures have varying levels of discomfort and downtime, and a free consultation can help you decide on the best procedure for your needs.…

Botox Brow Lift

What is the Botox Brow Lift? The position of the eyebrows are critical to how are faces are perceived by others. “A younger brow has a lower central brow (near your nose), the arch is lateral (at the edge of your pupil), and the tail is elevated. An older brow has less of an arch and tends to be straighter and less curved throughout,”explains NYC-based plastic surgeon Dr. Melissa Doft.  As we age, the lateral or tail-end of the brow tends to droop making the face appear older.  The Botox Brow Lift can change this.A surgical brow lift aims to lift the brow, opening the eye and giving a more youthful appearance.  Non surgically, Botox injections can be used to produce the same effect without the expense, downtime and risks of surgery.  Specifically, Botox can be carefully placed to relax some of the muscles of the forehead that depress the brow.  This allows the muscles that elevate the brow to produce a brow lift. The great thing about the Botox Brow Lift is that it is very easy to perform, has no downtime and it will go away if you don’t like it.  It is even adjustable if you get too much lift or arching of your eyebrow!Botox Brow Lift Before and AfterThe effects of Botox on the forehead and brow are very pleasing.  There should be a relaxation of the forehead lines or wrinkles and a slight arching of the tail-end of the brow, producing an opened, youthful eye.Botox Brow Lift UnitsSo how many units of Botox does it take to produce a brow lift?  The great thing, is not many.  To relax the frown lines it may require 20-25 units and to relax the forehead it may take 10-15 units.Botox Brow Lift CostAs not may units of Botox are required for the brow lift, the cost is not excessive.  A typical Botox Brow Lift Cost can run from $300-$400, but is different for every individual. How Long Does a Botox Brow Lift Last? The typical effects of Botox will last 3 -4 months.  If the Botox injections are repeated before the full effect goes away, sometimes the results can last longer.Botox Brow Lift Near MeBeleza Medspa offers trained and experienced Botox injectors at all of its locations in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park and Killeen Texas.  Contacts us now for your free Botox Brow Lift consultation!          …

Dispelling Botox Myths

Botox Cosmetic has been around for more than 10 years now and has been injected hundreds of millions of times.  It has an unparalleled safety record.  Most people are pretty familiar with it and what it does.  However, there are still many myths about Botox.  Let’s look at some Botox myths:Botox Works ImmediatelySome patients will see effects from their Botox in 1-2 days, but most patients require 1-2 weeks for full effect.  Nobody will see an immediate result from Botox injections.Botox Fills WrinklesBotox relaxes the muscles of facial expression that cause wrinkles.  Dermal fillers like Juvederm are needed in conjunction with Botox to fill wrinkles.  When used together, Botox and Juvederm can completely erase many lines and wrinkles.Botox is all I NeedBotox is just one component of facial rejuvenation which also includes volume replacement with dermal fillers and collagen stimulation with microneedling, laser resurfacing, and products like retin-a.  Using Botox alone will leave you with less than optimal results.Botox is not for MenBotox works great in both men and women.  Men get the same wrinkles as women and greatly benefit from Botox injections.  Men tend to have bigger and stronger facial muscles, and usually require more units of Botox. Some Practices Dilute BotoxBotox is supplied by its manufacturer as a freeze dried protein.  Everyone must mix the Botox with saline (salt water) to make it possible to inject it.  When Botox is sold by the unit, you are assured of knowing exactly how much Botox you are getting.Botox is a PoisonBotox is a purified protein derived from the botulinim toxin and is not a poison.  When injected properly, Botox Cosmetic is very safe.Botox is Too ExpensiveWhen you look at the effects of Botox in reducing and prevent facial wrinkles and lines, Botox is a wise investment compared to many other less effective procedures and products.Athletic People need more BotoxThe amount of Botox needed depends on your facial muscles and several other factors.  Your level of physical activity usually doesn’t affect the amount of Botox needed.I only need Botox once in a While. The good and bad thing about Botox is that it will only last 3-4 months in most patients.  To keep up the effects, maintenance Botox injections are necessary.   …

Unfortunately, anytime a needle is used there is a risk of bruising afterwards.  When Botox and/or dermal fillers like Juvederm are injected, sometimes the needle may nick a small blood vessel.  This may produce a small bruise that will resolve on its own.  However, there are some things we can do to prevent this annoying side effect.Experienced InjectorsLook for an injector that has a great deal of experience with injectables like Botox and Juvederm.  They have seen the complications like bruising and know how to avoid them.  But even the best injector will still sometimes get some bruising!Avoid Certain MedicationsAny medications that you are taking that interfere with your body’s ability to clot, can lead to bruising no matter how careful the injector is.  These include medications like Aspirin, Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, Coumadin, Heparin, and Fish Oil.  If you are taking some of these supplements on your own, we would advise holding them for at least a week before your injections.  If your are taking them under the direction of a physician, please discuss holding them first with your provider.SupplementsCertain supplements are commonly used to prevent bruising.  These include Arnica Montana and Bromelain.  They are both easy to find in your local pharmacy.  They can be taken before and after your injections to prevent bruising.  Bromelain is found naturally in pineapples!Avoid TraumaThis means not rubbing or touching in any way your injection sites.  This also means not running or lifting weights for a few days.  If you do anything to increase your blood pressure, you can make any of those injection sites bleed and bruise.ElevationDo not immediately lay down after these injections.  This will increase blood flow to these areas and cause bruising.Cold CompressesYes cold compresses work!  Not too hard though, as trauma will cause bruising.…

Botox Lip Flip Austin

What is the Botox Lip Flip? So, you’re thinking about getting your lips done, but you are held up by two things: 1.) Cost, 2.) You’re scared they’ll be too big or look ‘ducky’. We get it. We hear it every single day. The cost of Juvederm in the lips can run from $495 – $595, which can be costly for some people. Of course at Beleza, we would never make your lips look ‘ducky’ or too big, but if you’re looking for a less-stressful alternative to getting that perfect pout, try the Botox Lip Flip!In a nutshell, to achieve the perfect Botox Lip Flip, Botox is strategically injected into the superficial layers of the orbicularis oris (muscles around the mouth, see photo) to relax the muscle fibers just enough to flip the lip outward without losing the function of the muscle. Botox around lips also treats lip lines, aka “smoker line”.How long does the Botox Lip Flip take?Less than a minute! The Botox Lip Flip is an insanely fast procedure, but don’t think you can go just anywhere to have this done.  The Botox Lip Flip is a complicated procedure and must be done properly by a professional Botox provider who has extensive experience in administering this procedure. Care must be taken to use enough Botox to see an effect, but not too much to affect the ability to use a straw. How much does the Botox Lip Flip Cost?We have seen patients need 2-4 units for the Botox Lip Flip, and we have seen patients need up to 6 units. Beleza charges $12/unit, so it will depend how many units the provider recommends. Typically, only 1-2 units of Botox is needed in each lip line. Say you need $6 units, your cost would be only $72! If you are a Beleza VIP member, it would be even lower! Platinum Members receive Botox for $10.50/unit, so it would cost $63 if you are Platinum Member receiving $6 units. One good thing about Botox in the lips is that you typically don’t have to wait the full 7 days to see results, the lip flips right away (results can vary). What Botox will do to your expression?

What is Botox? Botox has been around for cosmetic purposes more than 10 years.  It has safely been injected in millions of patients.  Botox is a purified protein that used to relax the muscles of facial expression that cause wrinkles.  Repeated activity of facial muscles will eventually causes lines and wrinkles in the skin.  Botox injected into these muscles causes these wrinkles to not only smooth out, but also to prevent them.  But what will Botox do to your facial expression? What Botox will do to your facial expression. The goal of Botox injections is not to completely freeze the muscles, but to relax them enough to smooth and prevent wrinkles.  So what Botox does to your facial expression is usually good. Relaxing frown lines can make you look less angry and tired.  Botox forehead is used to perform a brow lift.  Botox crow’s-feet can make your eyes look wider.  Botox lips can make your lips poutier.  All of these effects from Botox will make you look younger and more refreshed but still have normal facial expressions. How to get rid of facial wrinkles. The first thing to remember is those wrinkles didn’t form overnight and will not go away overnight either.  Getting rid of wrinkles takes a multi-faceted approach coupled with continued maintenance.  There is no miracle cure that will take care of every wrinkle.  A general understanding of why wrinkles form is needed to properly treat them. What is Collagen? The building block of skin is collagen.  When we are younger we make plenty of collagen and its all in good shape.  As we age, mostly due to sun exposure, our collagen production slows down even to the point of losing collagen.  This loss of collagen causes wrinkles, sagging and generally older looking skin.  The key to treating wrinkles is to identify the factors contributing to loss of collagen and restarting collagen production.A great way to look at getting rid of wrinkles is to imagine the face as a canvas.  The canvas itself is your facial skin.  Things like Botox and Juvederm are the paint.   With a fresh, new canvas, an artist can paint a beautiful picture.  However, starting with a damaged canvas, even the best artist will have difficulty painting on it.  So trying to use Botox and Juvederm to fix wrinkles on sun damaged skin will also not be very effective.  The best first step is to rebuild the canvas, the facial skin, so that Botox and Juvederm can do what they are designed to do. Collagen Stimulation. So how do we restart collagen production?  The cells that produce collagen are in the deep layer of the skin, the dermis.  We must reach them and stimulate them to produce new collagen. There are several ways to do this.  Laser resurfacing is the gold standard and involves a Fractional CO2 laser.  The laser beam penetrates the dermis and directly stimulates the collagen cells.  The heat generated by the laser also causes the upper sun-damaged layer of skin to peel while causing the collagen already present to tighten.  Laser resurfacing produces great results but does have 7 days of recovery. An easier, less aggressive method to stimulate collagen production is microneedling.  Microneedling uses multiple small needles to penetrate into the dermis and directly stimulate the collagen cells.  Performed in-office under local anesthesia and has much less recovery than laser resurfacing.  It is repeated every 6 weeks to get maximum collagen stimulation. Skin Care. Skin care products are also key to stimulate collagen production and keeping it going.  No reason to spend money on expensive procedures and not protect you investment with the right skin care products.  Retin A and other retinols directly stimulates collagen cells to make collagen.  If one product is used, it is Retin a for its anti-aging properties.  There are many other growth factors, peptides and antioxidants that are able to promote and prolong collagen production. Botox and Juvederm. So we have now rebuilt the canvas with collagen stimulation procedures and we are maintaining it with skin care products.  This is a great time to add Botox and Juvederm to our regimen. Botox injections, as we previously discussed, relax the muscles of facial expression causing facial wrinkles.  Juvederm allows us to fix the other major sign of facial aging, volume loss.  Cheeks are refilled, lines smoothed and lips plumped.  The combination of collagen stimulation with Botox and Juvederm, gives you long-lasting results.…
