The old method of hair transplant, and it’s still being done, is the strip method. An incision is made from ear to ear on the back of your head and a strip of your scalp is removed. As you can imagine, this is painful, has a long recovery and leaves a large scar. Look around and you will see many men with these unsightly scars! The strip of scalp has to then be cut up into individual hair follicles. This is a long process that exposes the delicate hair follicles to trauma and exposure to air. Neograft Hair Transplant or automated FUE Hair Transplant extraction is a marked improvement over the strip method. Individual hair follicular units are punched out from the donor site on the back of the scalp. There are no long linear scars, but instead many small circular scars that are less noticeable. The harvested follicular units are suctioned into a special holding chamber keeping them moist and manipulation is kept to a minimum. As a result, the ‘take rate’, or the percentage of transplanted hair follicles that survive is more than 90%!
On the day of your procedure, you will arrive early in the morning since this will take some time. We will already have determined from your preop visits, how many grafts will be needed and where they will be transplanted. We will then mark the donor and transplant areas and take pictures. The next step is to shave the donor site (we can shave your whole head if you want it to match!). You will be placed face down on a comfortable bed so that we can easily access the back of your head. We will then administer the nerve blocks and local anesthesia to the donor area to make the procedure painless. Once we are sure you are numb, the harvesting of the hair follicular units begins.
The Neograft hair transplant system has a hand piece with a motorized punch. The Neograft technician centers the punch over the hair follicle following the angle of the hair. The punch then rotates and separates the hair follicle from the scalp.
Gentle suction then transports the hair follicle into a moist holding chamber.
The hair follicles are then removed from the chamber, checked for quality and separated into categories depending on the number of hairs they contain. They will be kept moist until they are replanted. You will then be sat up and attention turned to the transplant area. Nerve blocks and local anesthesia will then be applied to these areas. Once anesthesia is obtained, a small needle will then be used to make implant sites. This is the tricky part as the implant sites have to be placed at exact angles to replicate the angles of your native hair. It is also important to make random and sufficient number of implant sites to give a good hair density.
At this point, the hair follicles are ready to be transplanted. The Neograft technician then individually places each hair follicle into a hair implant site. The implant is carefully placed to follow the angle of the site and without damaging it. This will take several hours to complete.
At the conclusion of the procedure, the donor site will be bandaged and you will be given post-procedure care instructions. It will take a few weeks for the hair follicles to become established in your scalp and any type of trauma needs to be strictly avoided. It will take 4-6 months to see some hair growth from these hair transplant follicles and up to a year for final results.
