More and more people are seeking help from cosmetic surgeons for those annoying problem areas that just won’t go away through diet and exercise. In fact, statistics show that in 2009, a whopping $10.5 billion was spent on cosmetic surgery procedures. Additionally, there has been a 50% rise in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures.
One of the main procedures sought out was liposuction. However, many people do not need the drastic fat reduction effects of traditional liposuction, they just need help with those pockets of fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise. Now there are new safer, more effective procedures available that can help.
Traditional liposuction removes large amounts of fat through a procedure that entails large incisions where the fat is suctioned out use large tubes or cannulas. This procedure often requires general anesthesia and a long recovery time.
A new procedure called CoolSculpting can help you get rid of those difficult areas such as those “love handles” through a much less invasive procedure. This FDA approved procedure is used for localized fat reduction and does not require needles, surgery or an extended recovery period.
The CoolSculpting Procedure
With the CoolSculpting procedure, which lasts about one hour, the fat cells in the treatment area are gently frozen to allow a natural and controlled elimination of fat cells. This process is known as cryolipolysis or cold lipolysis. After the procedure, the treated fat cells will go through apoptosis or natural cell death, and will shrink and disappear. The dead fat cells will be eliminated by the body through the liver and digestive tract.
On average, the CoolSculpting procedure will provide a 20 percent fat reduction in the treatment area, and results can be seen in as little as three weeks after the procedure, with more dramatic results occurring over a two to four month period.
During the procedure, patients are awake and alert, and can even read or sleep during the treatment. Because of the short time and ease of treatment, patients can easily undergo the treatment and then return to their regular activities without any downtime.
