How does SmartLipo Laser Liposuction work?

How does SmartLipo Laser Body Sculpting compare to conventional liposuction?

Conventional liposuction is simply outdated and unnecessary. Usually performed in the operating room, it requires general anesthesia which is more dangerous than the liposuction itself! Due to the risk of anesthesia, time is of the essence and larger instruments are used to speed up the fat removal. As a result, irregularities are more frequent, and loose, stretched-out skin is not treated.

SmartLipo Laser Liposuction is performed in office, under the safer local anesthesia. It is becoming the standard of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery. We use smaller instruments to sculpt and contour the body. Finally, the SmartLipo laser tightens the skin after the fat is removed. Is there a recovery period for SmartLipo Laser Liposuction?

SmartLipo Laser Liposuction is a minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery procedure which usually requires only local anesthesia and several small incisions (usually 3-4 mm). There are no sutures afterwards and the incisions are left open to encourage drainage over the first couple of days. There is some soreness and swelling afterward, but most patients are able to return to work in 2-3 days, and resume their exercise routine within the first week.

How many SmartLipo Liposuction treatments are required?

Typically only one treatment is required. Once the procedure is completed, the fat cells are permanently removed from your body. Results can be seen within 1-2 weeks, with continued improvement over three to six months. A compression garment must be worn for several weeks after treatment, depending on the body area treated. Cosmetic surgery is as much an art as a science. So follow-up procedures are occasionally needed to approach perfection.

What is tumescent liposuction?

With tumescent liposuction, large volumes of a saline solution containing dilute lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and dilute epinephrine (a drug to shrink capillaries and prevent blood loss) are injected with minimal discomfort directly into areas of excessive fatty deposits. The tumescent fluid completely numbs the skin and fat and lifts these layers off the muscles so they can be accessed.

Once the liquid is injected, a small incision is made in the skin, and a tube connected to a vacuum is inserted into the fatty layer. Using to and fro movements, the fat is drawn through the tube into a collection system. The tumescent method enables the surgeon to remove large amounts of fat more uniformly with fewer skin irregularities and less bleeding and bruising. We combine tumescent liposuction and SmartLipo laser liposuction for superior results and quicker recovery.

So what is Vaser, Tickle Lipo, Triplex, Slim Lipo, Cool Lipo, Power Assisted Lipo, Water Body Jet Lipo?

The cosmetic surgery body contouring and sculpting market is very hot right now and there are a confusing array of procedures available. Companies are constantly introducing new technologies that purport to be the next great thing. They claim to produce better results with less discomfort. Dr. Broder has tested all these technologies over the years and attends several annual national conferences to stay on the cutting edge.

Vaser uses ultrasonic energy to liquify fat but can cause burns and really doesn’t tighten skin. Triplex, Cool and Slim Lipo are all lasers that are variations of the original, SmartLipo. Besides making the procedure more expensive, there are no studies that show these lasers produce any better results. Water or Body Jet Lipo uses a stream of water to help remove fat. But since we already infuse liquid into the fat layer, injecting more doesn’t really help. Tickle Lipo and Power Assisted are very similar, utilizing the mechanical action of the liposuction cannula to remove fat. Dr. Broder tested both of these and found Power Assisted (PAL) to produce better results while improving the patient’s experience. As a result, we now use Power Assisted along with Smartlipo Laser Liposuction.

Shouldn’t I have this done by a Plastic Surgeon?

Unfortunately, liposuction is more of an artistic pursuit than a scientific one. Dr. Broder has the requisite surgical training to perform the procedure safely without any complications. However, the true art of liposuction involves body sculpting and contouring. A surgeon either has these skills or he doesn’t. It cannot be taught in the same way a true artist is just born with talent. So completing a plastic surgery residency does not guarantee that the surgeon has the creativity to deliver the desired result. One just has to look at the unfortunate victims of all the celebrity plastic surgeons. It is up to you to interview your surgeon, look at his or her pictures and experience, and decide if he or she understands what you want and can deliver the results.
