If you are like most women, you cringe at the thought of having to put on a bathing suit. No matter what the shape of your body, most women have some amount of cellulite lingering around their thighs, butts, stomachs, and elsewhere. The dimpled, cottage cheese look is certainly not something that you would like to sport around, but it seems all but impossible to get rid of. Cellulite occurs when pockets of fat just below the skin push up again porous tissue on our bodies. Because women have much more porous skin than men, it unfortunately occurs more on our bodies. And while there is no “cure” for cellulite, women have fought to reduce it for ages, using expensive cream, herbal remedies, and even special devices. But, for those of us who are looking for real solutions that won’t break the bank or drastically change our lifestyles, I am providing 6 simple tips to get you on a cellulite-reduced path. While I can’t tell you that your cellulite will disappear, I can tell you that you will be healthier, look better, and reduce signs of unwanted cellulite. Tip #1: Clean Up Your Diet You know the old saying, “you are what you eat”? Well, in the case of cellulite, there was never a truer statement. Cellulite does not hold back when it comes to body type, which is why women of all shapes and sizes have it. That means that cellulite isn’t necessarily about how much you weigh, but what you eat. By eating a diet rich in unprocessed foods, antioxidants, fresh fruits, and vegetables, you can begin to decrease the amount of toxins being stored in your body. Because toxins are stored in extra fat, many people see changes in the amount of cellulite they have then they adopt this sort of diet. The key here is to eat fresh, colourful foods that flush the toxins out of your body. Also, avoid eating too much salt and sugar, which are also stored in fat cells and bloat the body, making cellulite look even worse. Tip #2: Hydrate Another vital way to flush toxins—and, thus, cellulite—out of your body is by drinking plenty of water. Not only will water flush out toxins, but it improved the look of your skin by keeping it hydrated, fresh, and firm. Drink between 8 and 10 8oz glasses each day. As a bonus, add lemon or cucumber slices to increase the de-toxifying effect! Tip #3: Exercise Not only does regular exercise help reduce fat, which causes cellulite, but it helps you further detoxify your body and improve the overall look of your skin. When you exercise regularly, your body will get used to a routine of detoxifying through sweat. Not to mention, when you begin to develop muscle tone, your skin looks firmer, hiding signs of cellulite. For best results, exercise at least 30 minutes, 4 days a week and stay consistent. Tip #4: Improve Circulation Finally, if diet and exercise aren’t enough for you, try working on your circulation as a way to reduce signs of cellulite. Many spas offer treatments such as coffee scrubs and massages which improve blood circulation, which helps eliminate stagnant toxins. You can also try at home scrubs and skin brushes, or finally cash in on that massage your husband has been promising for years. However you do it, regular treatments to increase blood flow have been proven to help reduce cellulite and contribute to overall health and well-being. By following these simple tips, you will be well on your way to reducing signs of cellulite on your body, as well as improving your overall health. So pour yourself a glass of lemon water and cheers to a bright, cellulite-free future!…

Medical Spas

Going to a medical spa can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience as well as a way to get some actual medical procedures and treatments. Med spas are considered a combination of a medical clinic and a day spa, but the procedures and treatments that can be administered are less than what an actual medical clinic is capable of. Services Performed at Med Spas There are many services performed at med spas. From basic spa treatments like massages and exfoliations to Botox and microdermabrasion, med spas have it all. Some other treatments include facials, waxing, massages, concierge medicine, men’s health, physicals, laser hair removal and much more depending on which type of spa that you are visiting and where the spa is located. The treatments and procedures available at a med spa vary by location because there are different laws and regulations that each state and/or country has to abide by. If you are unsure of the procedures allowed in your area, contact your local health authority department. Training Required for Physicians and Practitioners As stated before, the type of training and certifications required vary by area. One common factor is that everyone who administers a treatment or procedure is supposed to be trained, qualified and certified for that treatment. If you are ever doubtful of a staff member’s qualifications, all you have to do is ask to see the person’s certifications. If he/she is unable or unwilling to provide you with proof, you have the right to call the local health department to find out what your next step should be. Choosing a Med Spa that is Right for You The best way to choose the med spa that is right for you is by researching what you want and/or need. Using a search engine on the internet can be helpful in finding reviews, but reviews are not always trustworthy sources when dealing with anything health related. Sometimes you can get references from your primary physician, but even family and friends are great resources for finding a trustworthy clinic. What you decide to do is completely up to you, but it is highly recommended that you research the clinic before scheduling an appointment. Med spas are meant to be used for minor procedures and pampering. Most med spas are not licensed nor do they have staff qualified for doing invasive procedures. When in doubt about a clinic, call the local health department. If you feel as if you have been lied to or mistreated, make sure that you follow local protocols in reporting the clinic. Always ensure that you are well-informed when dealing with anything health-related.…

What is Anti Aging? We age for several reasons.  There are external factors like the sun, pollution, cigarettes and bad diets that cause us to age.  There are also internal factors that effect aging which mainly involve our genes and their expression.  Many of the external factors influence the expression of genes.  It is the external factors that we mainly have control of.  So anti aging involves lessening these external factors as well as their effect on our genes and their expression. What is the Best Anti Aging? Simply put the best anti aging is healthy living.  Good nutrition and regular exercise will probably make more of a difference than anything else.  What you put into your mouth has more to do with how you age than anything else.  Maintaining a normal weight and eating more of a plant based diet has been proven to extend life and prevent disease.  Exercise has so many positive effects throughout the body that would make a drug company envious.  Even better, exercise has no cost, and makes you feel and look better! How about Anti Aging Creams? The market is flooded with anti aging creams.  What works?  Unfortunately most anti aging creams do not work.  They are mostly overpriced moisturizers buoyed by advertising.   However there are many anti aging creams with proven anti aging benefit.  They consist of retinoids, growth factors and antioxidants.  Retinoids have proven ability to stimulate skin cells to make new collagen, the building block of skin.  Growth factors are proteins that stimulate a multitude of effects in many other cells.  Antioxidants are natural substances that absorb the damaging free radicals produced by pollution and sun exposure.  So looking for medical grade anti aging creams with these ingredients is most effective. How about Anti Aging Skin? Besides the anti aging creams we already mentioned, there are many other anti aging skin treatments.  The first  and most effective anti aging skin treatment is protection.  Liberal use of sun blocks prevents the sun damage from occurring.  Once there are visible signs of aging, there are many treatments to not only improve its appearance but to actually reverse some of the damage.  IPL photofacials utilize broad band light to remove any brown spots or small blood vessels.   CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing can remove the upper layer of damaged skin and heat the lower layer to induce skin tightening.   Radiofrequency treatments like Thermage and Venus Freeze use radio waves to heat the lower skin layers to cause tightening.  Chemical peels can remove layers of damaged skin while stimulating some tightening.  A consultation with a skin care specialist can determine which anti aging skin treatments are best for you.…

What is the Liquid Facelift? The traditional facelift has lost favor with many people.  The expense, risk, pain, downtime as well as the artificial results just don’t cut it with modern consumers.  Savvy patients are now looking for easier facelift alternatives that are safe and convenient.   They also require little to no downtime as well as reasonable prices.  Most importantly, they demand immediate results.    The liquid facelift may be the procedure they are looking for. Based on the use of Botox and fillers, the liquid facelift concentrates on the use of injectables to improve facial appearance.   The good thing is that these procedures have been performed tens of millions of times and have a remarkable safety record.  They require a short office visit and have little to no downtime.  Their prices have been driven down by competition and their results are evident in a short time. Botox and fillers are used to relax wrinkles and tension lines throughout the face as well as restore lost volume.  Their combination use allows for even greater results as their effects complement each other.  Even better they can be repeated as needed allowing maintenance of the face as it ages. Botox Botox is the neurotoxin that has been around more than 10 years with a proven safety record.  Its judicious use to relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles and cannot be replicated by other treatments. Botox is the foundation of the liquid facelift as it allows facial fillers to work better to fill lines.  Botox can even be used to gently alter the facial muscle dynamics to lift the brow.  Botox is injected painlessly with very small needles and takes 1-2 days to work and 1-2 weeks to see full effect. Facial Fillers The other mainstay of the liquid facelift is the use of facial fillers.   Facial fillers like Juvederm, are used to fill lines and wrinkles as well as restore lost facial volume.  They consist of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural building block of skin.  They are injected to smooth lines like laugh lines as well as to rebuild cheeks, temples and chins.   They require topical anesthesia and can have some swelling, bruising and redness after the procedure.  There results are immediately evident and facial fillers like Juvederm Voluma can last up to 2 years. Is the Liquid Facelift For Me? The good thing is that almost all patients can be helped with Botox and facial fillers.  However, every patient is different and there are different degrees of facial aging.  A consultation is required to determine if the liquid facelift is the best treatment for you.  Patients with more advanced aging may require complementary procedures like IPL Photofacials or CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing before the liquid facelift.…

What is a Non Surgical Facelift? We all know the signs of the aging face. Drooping skin, deep wrinkles, sunken cheeks and rough skin.  Traditionally, we have been taught that the surgical facelift was the only answer.   Driven by the plastic surgery community, expensive and painful facelift operations have been the norm.   Requiring general anesthesia, patients were faced with the risks of having their breathing taken over by a machine.  Coupled with a painful recovery and high prices, the artificial facelift results hardly seem worth it. This has led many doctors and patients to seek non surgical facelift alternatives.   The goal is to address many of the signs of the aging face without the risk, pain, downtime and expense of the traditional facelift.  As a result, the market has been flooded with many treatments and procedures with dubious claims.  Miracle creams, microcurrent treatments, and facials just don’t work.  The good thing is that there are new non surgical facelift treatments that are proven to work. The Best Non Surgical Facelift Alternatives. There exists a great deal of medical knowledge about aging skin and how to treat it.  We know that many of the changes in aging skin are due to breakdown of the main building block of skin, collagen.  As we age our collagen production decreases and our existing collagen breaks down.  This leads to the drooping skin, wrinkles and loss of elasticity we see.   So many of the effective anti aging skin treatments revolve around collagen stimulation.   To induce skin cells to make new collagen and tighten existing collagen is the real fountain of youth. Retinoids The retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A and are used topically.  They actually have been shown to induce skin cells to make new collagen and turnover existing collagen at a faster rate.  They range from over the counter retinols to prescription grade retin-a (tretinoin).  They need to be part of any anti aging regimen and are a cheap and easy to use facelift alternative.  Results take several months, but retinoids are safe to use indefinitely. Heat The other proven method to induce new collagen formation is the use of heat.  Heat has been shown to tighten existing collagen and induce skin cells to make new collagen.  The new collagen appears at least a month after the application of heat.  The trick with the use of heat is to apply it at the right level of the skin, in the right amount without causing burns.  There are many ways to due this.  There are lasers that use light energy to apply heat at different levels like CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing.  Radiofrequency uses radio waves to penetrate the skin and heat the lower layers.  Examples of this include Thermage and Venus Freeze.  There are also now procedures that use ultrasound energy to heat the skin like Ultherapy.  All of these machines are just tools that require appropriate patient selection and application for best results. NeoJuvenescence Lift Studies have shown that the best results come from combination treatments.  Lawrence Broder MD at Beleza Medspa Austin TX has developed the NeoJuvenescence Lift, a combination non surgical facelift alternative.  The NeoJuvenescence Lift involves the proven procedures CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing, SmartLipo Laser liposuction, Platelet Rich Plasma and Fat Transfer for maximum results.  The NeoJuvenescence Lift provides a fresh new skin, restores facial volumes, removes jowls and and tightens the face and neck overall.  It provides the latest non surgical facelift procedures in one treatment. …

Restore Lost Cheek Volume and Get a Lifting Effect with Juvederm Voluma. The Aging Face As we age, we tend to focus on the easily visible signs of aging like wrinkles and brown spots.  However, we tend to overlook the most tell-tale sign of aging, loss of facial volume.  Not only does the skin thin and sag with time, but we actually start to lose fat, muscle and bone in our faces.  This leads to dramatic changes in the appearance of our brows and temples, cheeks and chins.  This loss of volume, more than anything else causes us to have an older looking face. Restoring Facial Volume Thankfully, rejuvenation of the aging face has progressed from more than filling in wrinkles.  We have known for years that restoration of facial volume in the cheeks, brow and chin is the key to facial rejuvenation.   Our tool box currently includes dermal fillers like the hyaluronic acid Juvederm and Radiesse and facial fat transfer.  We are now introducing Juvederm Voluma for such purposes.  JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is indicated for deep  injection for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume deficit in the mid-face in adults over the age of 21. What is Juvederm Voluma XC? You may be familiar with Juvederm XC which is a very popular dermal filler.  It consists of hyaluronic acid which is a natural building block of skin.  It has a great safety record and is used to smooth lines and restore volume throughout the face.  Juvederm Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler treated with Vycross technology.  This cross links the hyaluronic acid particles which make the filler smoother and longer lasting.  In fact it has been shown to last up to two years! How is Juvederm Voluma Used? Like other dermal fillers, Juvederm Voluma is injected using a small needle.  The site is numbed before the injection with a topical anesthetic.  Juvederm Voluma also contains the local anesthetic lidocaine which will produce a relatively painless procedure.  Every patient is different and your injector will indicate where on your cheeks the volume loss is most evident.  The Juvederm Voluma is injected deeply below the skin, close to the bone.  It then can be shaped to match the contours of your face using gentle massage. How Long Does Juvederm Voluma Last? The initial studies have indicated that most of the Juvederm Voluma patients will require a touch up at the one month mark.  After this touch up, the cross linked hyaluronic acid produced by the Vycross technology has been shown to still be evident up to two years.  During this time the hyaluronic acid is gradually broken down by the body.  It is important to note, that during this time we will continue to age and further lose more volume.  So volume replacement is a procedure that requires occasional maintenance.…

Fraxel Laser

Laser Resurfacing What is Fraxel Laser? Fraxel Laser is a form of laser resurfacing and skin tightening using a fractional CO2 laser.   The laser beam is split into thousand of little dots that are used to perforate the skin (fractional laser).  This causes the upper layer of skin where discoloration, roughness and fine lines are present,  to peel off in 3-4 days.  This leaves a shiny, new fresh upper layer of skin that alone will take years off the face.  The fraxel laser also introduces a great deal of heat into the lower layer of skin where collagen is made.  Collagen is the building block of skin.  The heat stimulates the skin cells  to make new collagen and leads to skin tightening starting 3-4 weeks after the procedure.  This skin tightening will go for months and can be aided by the use of retinoids and growth factors. Is laser resurfacing safe? Does it hurt? By splitting the laser beam into scattered dots, the old, untreated skin is maintained between the dots.  This old skin acts as a natural band aid that stays on until the new skin is ready to emerge.  As a result, the risks of infection and scarring is greatly reduced.  It is an intense procedure and we apply topical anesthetic cream 45 minutes before the procedure.  After the procedure your skin is cooled with cold, wet soaks.  You will continue a specific skin care regimen at home. What is the downtime? There will be several days of redness and swelling until the skin peels.  After the skin has peeled, the skin will be pink for up to a week .   It will be necessary to keep the skin moist with the products we provide as it heals.  We will also prescribe several oral medications including pain medication to help with your recovery.  Sun exposure must be strictly avoided after the procedure. Is fraxel laser the best choice for me? Bang for your buck, laser skin resurfacing is the best treatment to remove sun damage and tighten skin.  There are other procedures with less downtime like the Whisper laser peel, chemical peels and photofacials.  A free consultation is required to determine which procedure is best for you. What else can Fraxel laser treat? Acne scars are very troubling for the patient and difficult to treat.  They consist of damage in the deep, dermal layer of the skin.  Surface treatments are ineffective.  Laser resurfacing offers the ability to remove the upper layers of skin and introduce heat into the dermal layer.  The heat stimulates skin cells in the dermis to make collagen and remodel the collagen present.   This can lead to softening of the acne scars and multiple treatments are required.…

Microdermabrasions at Home

The popularity of systems used to preform microdermabrasions at home is rising steadily due to the wealth of new systems on the market that claim to be spa quality. Although we support a comprehensive at home skin regimen as a key part of an overall skin health plan, machines used to complete microdermabrastions at home shouldn’t replace office visits, and here’s why. Your skin is the largest organism on your body and it is the organism most often exposed to the elements. Because of this, not only your appearance but your health depend on regular care and maintenance. Visiting a skin care specialist with consistency can ensure that you are not over or under treating your skin. At home microdermabrasions may feel effective but can easily lead to overtreatment, over drying and an improper PH balance in your skin. When you visit a Beleza location for your skincare routine, we can look at your overall treatment plan, including at home treatments, in office treatments and products to determine if your skin routine is at its best. Many patients, in an effort to save money, purchase machines designed for microdermabrasions at home, only to find that the effort leads to more troubling skin issues because their treatment plan is not consistent or monitored by a professional. As so many of us have experienced, skin is a tricky thing. We are encouraged to wash our faces regularly to prevent breakouts but too much washing can lead to overdrying, which can cause acne as our skin overproduces moisture to compensate. We are told to use products like sunscreen, vitamin c serums and more daily, but it can lead to an oversaturated, greasy feeling. So how do we determine what solutions will work for our skin? The answer is to visit a professional. Home microdermabrasion treatments can be great if balanced by regular office visits to keep skin healthy and, in the case that improvements are needed, to keep skin plans on track. Before you implement a new element or change a part of your at home skincare routine, be sure to speak with a specialist. Beleza offers free consultations so that we can help you determine the right steps for you to achieve your skincare goals. Your skin is what you show the world, and we know we can help you put your best skin forward.…

Do you struggle with lateral canthal lines, or crow’s feet around your eyes? If so, Botox may be a great solution for your concerns. Beleza has always offered Botox treatments for crow’s feet, but this application of Botox was recently approved by the FDA, meaning it is no longer an off-label use of the drug. Botox for crow’s feet is injected directly into the muscle around the eyes that causes the scrunching at the outer corners that ages our faces and causes us to look tired. Botox works to prevent those muscles from contracting, meaning that the lines caused by those muscles will not appear for 3 – 5 months after a Botox treatment. Regular use of Botox can extend the drugs’ period of efficacy. In many cases, the number of units of Botox needed to address a particular issue varies from patient to patient based on the depth of the wrinkle, the strength of the muscle and how regularly Botox is applied. As a general rule, and as approved by the FDA, Botox for crow’s feet can be expected to require 15 – 20 units per eye. If you’ve never had Botox before, it’s a great idea to come in for a free consultation to determine your ideal number of units and a final cost. There are still many areas of the face and neck that Botox can be used off-label. Off-label uses are completely safe if administered in normal doses and by an experienced professional injector. Beleza uses Botox in the neck to diminish lateral lines, at the arch in the brow to lessen the appearance of heavy eyelids, and above the lip to enhance the “pout” of the upper lip. Botox for crow’s feet is a long used off-label application and we expect that many more applications for Botox will be FDA approved in upcoming years. Botox is one of the most versatile drugs available in the aesthetic market and is even used to treat non-aesthetic needs like headaches, joint pain and anxiety. Botox for crow’s feet is an ideal treatment for anyone with concerns about the aging of the eye area, and as always, it is an extremely safe way to use Botox. But, with the new FDA approval of Botox for crow’s feet, patients can be even more sure of the drug’s safety and efficacy in the trouble area around the eyes.…
